Françoise Combes appointed to the new chair Galaxies and Cosmology by the Collège de France (2014-12-21)

EDP Sciences congratulates the astrophysicist Françoise Combes on her appointment by the Collège de France in the newly created chair Galaxies and Cosmology.

Françoise Combes is specialized in galaxies formation, their dynamics and their evolution since the Big Bang, but also dark matter.

Our universe is infinitely greater, more extraordinary and more mysterious than we have thought. We now know only 0.5% of its composition. The nature of dark matter is one of the great enigmas of modern astrophysics.

EDP Sciences, official partner of “2015, Year of Light in France”

The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL2015). EDP Sciences is proud to be official partner of “2015, Year of Light in France”, with the journals Photoniques, EPJ AM, EPJ D, EPJ AP and EPJ PV.

The United Nations has recognized the importance of raising global awareness of how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges in energy, education, agriculture and health.

The CNOP (Comité National d’Optique et de Photonique) is in charge of the French organization of this event and has developed an Organizational Committee including Agnès Henri, editorial Director at EDP Sciences.

Show, exhibitions, conferences… many events will be organized throughout France and for everyone: adults and children, general public, researchers, engineers, artists, industrialists...

The “2015, Year of Light in France” Opening Ceremony will be held in January, 8^th at the Grand amphithéâtre of the Sorbonne (Paris), with the sponsors Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and Serge Haroche, Nobel Prize of Physics (1997 and 2012).

A&A special feature: Planck 2013 results (2014-10-29)

Astronomy & Astrophysics is publishing a special feature of 31 articles describing the data gathered by Planck over 15 months of observations and released by ESA and the Planck Collaboration in March 2013. This series of papers presents the initial scientific results extracted from this first Planck dataset.

EDP Open at Frankfut Book Fair (2014-10-10)

On the second day of the Frankfurt Book Fair, EDP Open, the Open Access publishing arm of EDP Sciences, has released the results of a survey to appraise attitudes toward Open Access amongst learned society publishers. The survey was answered by 33 learned societies and the results were further supplemented by a focus group held at the annual UKSG meeting in April 2014. This presentation was focused on the main results of this survey.

Tribute to Jacques Friedel (2014-08-28)

It is with great sadness that we learnt the death of Jacques Friedel on August 27^th 2014 at the age of 93.

Jacques Friedel, this great scientist, played a determining role, as well in the wide domain of the condensed matter physics as in the organization of the scientific and the training in France. He was also one of the men having contributed most to the development of the French industry and metallurgy.

His scientific work was entirely dedicated to the theoretical physics of solids, in particular to the study of the defects and the electronic structure of the metallic compounds.

EDP Sciences has had the honor to have him as author from 1953 in the Journal de Physique et le Radium until 2011 in EPL, publishing also numerous articles in the Journal de Physique, Journal de Physique Letters, the European Physical Journal B and the Revue de Métallurgie.

In 1989, EDP Sciences (formely "Les Éditions de Physique”) published the book "Jacques Friedel - Scientific Works” with a foreword of the Nobel Prize in physics Sir Nevill Mott, who wrote:

I end here a very incomplete account of his work. I have known Jacques Friedel as a shy young man at Bristol, rapidly gaining confidence as a physicist; as leader of solid state physics in France, building up a powerful group… I am proud and happy to have had some part in starting him on his way.

Our sincere condolences and deepest sympathies go to his family and loved ones.

Journals transitioning from CUP to EDP Sciences for 2015 (2014-08-11)

EDP Sciences announces that hosting and distribution of sixteen of its journals, previously managed by Cambridge University Press (CUP), will transition to EDP Sciences for direct management from 2015 onwards. EDP Sciences will be working to the guidelines laid down by the Transfer Code of Practice, ensuring that journal content remains easily accessible by librarians and readers, and to ensure that the transfer process occurs with minimum disruption.

The transition has been arranged in order to support EDP Sciences in providing its customers with a seamless experience of accessing content from across their full portfolio of publications, and to ensure customers benefit from EDP Sciences’ ongoing investment in and innovation with its own platform and services.

SWSC receives First Impact Factor (2014-08-05)

EDP Sciences is pleased to announce that Journal of Space Weather and Space Climate (SWSC) has received its first impact factor of 2.519 according to the 2013 Journal Citation Report, published by Thomson Reuters.

“This Impact Factor is not an achievement. It is a picture in a long process. But it gives us a good idea of our place in the frame: a good one…,” said Jean Litensten, SWSC Editor in Chief. “This is of course firstly due to the great work by all the Associate Editors and the Editorial Office, we are very proud to belong to a team with so many skills and so much enthusiasm, able to construct something as beautiful as a scientific journal."

Thomson-Reuters also publishes an Immediacy Index of 0.600 (citations of SWSC articles published in 2013).

Launched in 2010, The Journal of Space Weather and Space Climate (SWSC) is an international multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary peer-reviewed open access, with an author pays model. SWSC publishes papers on all aspects of space weather and space climate from a broad range of scientific and technical fields.
